Your senior portrait session shouldn't be something you spend time stressing over. It should feel like a celebration of who you are right now and the hard work you've put into high school! The secret to a flawless, confident shoot comes down to preparation. Use this definitive checklist to ensure you show up ready and feeling confident for your session.

Plan Outfits (And Don't Forget Touch-Ups)

Save yourself the stress and start planning your outfits as soon as your session is booked! These will be photos that you and your family look back on for years (and will likely be your profile picture for just about everything...), so it's worth making sure the outfits feel fully you.

Aim for variety in your wardrobe. Depending on your session, you may bring just one outfit or be able to change. I always recommend these three options:

  • Look 1: An elevated casual look (your favorite jeans and a textured sweater or jacket).
  • Look 2: Something dressed up (a formal dress, a sharp suit, or a structured jumpsuit).
  • Look 3: A personality piece (a college crewneck, a sports jersey, or something else unique).

Before you actually go to the session, make sure everything is washed and ironed so there are no wrinkles or stains. Bring everything on hangers or neatly folded in the car so that you can easily change during your session. Of course, don't forget to pack a small "touch-up bag" with oil-blotting sheets, lip balm, a hairbrush, or any other little things you might need during your session.

Bring Meaningful Props

Props add authentic storytelling to your images. Think about what defined your high school experience:

  • Your athletic jersey, cleats, or equipment.
  • A musical instrument you play.
  • Your favorite books, art supplies, or even your car or skateboard.
  • Your cap, gown, and senior tassel.

Some of my favorite sessions in the past have included bringing their childhood stuffed animal and even their dog! If you're wanting to bring your pet, make sure you check with your photographer beforehand to plan.

Invite a Guest

You don't have to do this alone, unless that's your preference! Bringing a parent, a sibling, or your best friend is highly encouraged. They can help hold your extra outfits, check for stray hairs, and make you laugh so your smile looks genuine and natural.

Senior photos are totally doable if you feel most comfortable showing up alone, but I will always recommend inviting one (or multiple) helpers & hype people!

Pack a Pair of Comfy Shoes

You might love how those three-inch heels or brand-new boots look with your formal outfit, but walking across lawns or down cobblestone streets between photo spots will quickly ruin the fun. Always pack a pair of comfy sandals or tennis shoes to slip on while we walk from location to location. All of my past clients will tell you that I love a good walk to get to the best photo spot!
